Matt Grumley — Australian Scissorsmith

Matt Grumley is an Australian scissorsmith, working hairdresser and the founder of ShearGenius. He has worked behind the chair since 1990 and has sharpened professional scissors since 2007.

At his Lake Wendouree bench, Matt hand-sharpens professional hairdressing scissors on Japanese water stones, restores convex edges, polishes ride lines and resets blade tension. More than 100,000 professional scissors have been sharpened by hand at that bench. The work behind this reference comes from those inspections: how an edge wears, why tension mimics bluntness, when steel is worth saving and when replacement is the honest answer.

Matt is the only Australian scissorsmith represented across the international scissor-sharpening community. He also designs the ShearGenius range and inspects every new scissor sold; partner factories forge the steel in Japan, and each pair is hand-finished and tensioned in Lake Wendouree before it ships.
